In 1994, Rwanda faced one of the most horrific genocides in human history, when about 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis, but also Hutus, who were against the genocide, were killed in a hundred days. This tragedy has left irreparable wounds in the hearts of many people and raised questions about the reasons that led to such a terrible event. The causes of the genocide in Rwanda have their roots in the deep past of the country, in colonial influences, national myths and stereotypes. Colonial rule reinforced and consolidated ethnic differences, turning them into an ideology of domination and subordination. To this was added racist propaganda, which became a means of manipulating the masses and inciting hatred between ethnic groups. However, we should not forget about the internal factors that also contributed to fueling the conflict. The country's economic, political and social problems, including inadequate distribution of wealth, corruption and authoritarian rule, have created fertile ground for the spread of intolerance and violence. An important lesson learned from the genocide in Rwanda is the need to combat racism, xenophobia and intolerance. We must learn to respect and recognize the value of every human being, regardless of their ethnicity, religion or culture. It is also important to remember the role of the international community in preventing such tragedies. International organizations and countries must be vigilant and ready to intervene to prevent human rights violations and to stop conflicts that could lead to genocide. The genocide in Rwanda should be an instructive example of how important it is to achieve justice, peace and tolerance in society. Only with increased efforts to eliminate racism and intolerance will we be able to truly ensure the safety and well-being of every person on this planet.
